thing 5

Wow!!!!!! I feel like I am starting to understand some of the things that my sister (a 5th and 6th grade science teacher) and 24 year old children talk about. Soon my daughter might start to ask me if I am coming out from under the rock that I have been living under.

I will be moving from teaching preschool to 3rd grade this fall so the things that I am learning about are taking on a whole new meaning to me. I am excited about finding ways to use them with my class. I can see how they would be great tools for communicating with parents and keeping them informed of what their children are learning in school. I think that getting students involved in projects using wikis would be exciting and motivating for them.

I come from a large family and we live in many different states. I see how easily these things will make it easy for me to keep in touch with them.

I often use Craig's List, ebay and Amazon and we rely heavily on comments by consumers but we never leave reviews or comments. I think after this class I will be more willing to offer input. I also have a few blogs that I lurk on and now I think I will join and participate with those also!

  1. I know I learned alot from this class. I think I needed to do that in order to keep up in my job. Things are changing. As Bob Dylan said, "The times they are a changin'".

  2. A lot of people criticize social media because it takes time away from "face" time with others. I think social media adds a whole new dimension because we can stay in contact (albeit virtually) with people we don't get to see very often because they live so far away.

I also appreciate the participatory nature of sites like Amazon where we can use the collective minds of the masses to guide us in making (or NOT making) a purchase.

It's not one of the 23 things, but Skype is something I think you should check out. If you and your relatives and friends have webcams, you can see and talk to each other for free online. My wife and her parents in TN use it at least once a week to stay in touch.

  3. As a high school graduate of 1972, I'm beginning to feel like T-Rex. My 26 and 29 year old sons are frustrated with me because I don't text or have a facebook account.
I too feel like the direct social contact is essential, but I also know that any strategy to engage and maintain learning is worth it's weight in gold. This is especially true at the junior and senior high levels.
I hope more teachers begin to implement these strategies as opposed to the worksheet packets currently used in classrooms.
